I'm Darren Merinuk from Winnipeg, Canada. I draw funny little pictures for a living.

2- What comes first to your life, music or drawing?

Drawing came first for sure. I've been reading comics and watching cartoons on TV for as long as I can remember and trying to draw stuff myself since I was a little kid. I didn't really start listening to and spending money on music until I was 15 or so.

3- how does an illustration of yours develop? From the idea to the final result.

I talk to the band (or whoever I'm working for) to get their ideas, then I think about it until I come up with a layout that I think will be dynamic and exciting. Then I make a tight pencil drawing on Bristol board and send it over to them. If it's approved I ink the drawing (I use Winsor-Newton brushes and crowquil pens for that, strictly old school), then scan it and add color and text if necessary in Photoshop. If I'm working on my own ideas it's the same process, just simpler because I get to make all the decisions myself.

Too many to list them all but some are: Cramps, Ramones, Damned, Angry Samoans, Fear, DOA, Big Boys, Misfits, Devil Dogs, Dwarves, Kings of Nuthin', etc etc.

I work mostly for small bands that are not very famous, but some of the better-known ones that I've done stuff for are Electric Frankenstein, Richie Ramone, the Independents, the Misfits, etc.

Mostly my art appears on record sleeves these days, but I've done lots of posters, T-shirt art, illustrations and ads for magazines, comic strips and whatever else people ask me to do. This stuff mostly comes out in Europe and North America but I've worked for people all around the world.

7- what types of graphic arts do you work with?

The biggest influence on my art is comic books from when I was a kid, so almost all my work is done with brush and ink to try to recreate that style. I've done a tiny bit of painting and hope to explore that area more someday but so far it's been old style cartooning all the way for me.

8- what was the best show you saw? Do you remember why?

I don't know if it was the best musically but it was the most memorable: GG Allin at a club called The Rail in Seattle in 1993, a few months before he died. All the shows I've seen since then have seemed pretty predictable and safe by comparison with that one.

9- what are the musical styles of the bands with which you make your artwork?

I pretty much stick to rock'n'roll because that's what I like best and I think I understand what kind of art fans of that kind of music like to see: Punk, garage rock, surf, rockabilly and stuff like that. I like raw, primitive music with a lotta emotion in it mostly, not a fan of cleaned up poppy stuff.
Me apego bastante al rock and roll porque eso es lo que más me gusta y creo que entiendo qué tipo de fanáticos del arte de ese tipo de música les gusta ver: Punk, garage rock, surf, rockabilly y cosas así.
Me gusta la música cruda y primitiva con mucha emoción en su mayoría, no un fanático de las cosas amapolas limpias.
10- do you follow the illustrations of other artists? Who are they?

Yeah, there's lots of great artists around these days. I like Tom Bagley (aka Tomb)'s work a lot, Tony Fero is doing great stuff, Sol Rac and Poleta over in Buenos Aires, Marcel Bontempi, Olaf Jens, Karl Kaufmann, Johnny Ace, Shawn Dickinson, Mik Baro. There's a lot of 'em, I'm sure I'm forgetting some really good ones.
Si, hay muchos grandes artistas en estos días.
Me gusta mucho el trabajo de Tom Bagley (alias Tomb), Tony Fero está haciendo grandes cosas, Sol Rac y Poleta en Buenos Aires, Marcel Bontempi, Olaf Jens, Karl Kaufmann, Johnny Ace, Shawn Dickinson, Mik Baro.

11- what would your life be like without art and music?
11- ¿Cómo sería tu vida sin arte y música?
I honestly can't imagine what it would be like. I was lucky to get started doing this kind of work 25 years ago and I'm very lucky to still be doing it. All I know is that I'd be really bitter and unhappy if I had to do something else.

Tuve la suerte de comenzar a hacer este tipo de trabajo hace 25 años y tengo mucha suerte de seguir haciéndolo.
