10ch10 -Ante todo gracias por aceptar mi amistad.

Sé que eres un ilustrador conocido, pero hay muchos lugares donde necesitas difundir tu trabajo.

Esta entrevista se publicará en español, con la intención de llegar a una multitud de personas que no hablan el idioma inglés.

First of all thank you for accepting my friendship. 

I know that you are a well-known illustrator, but there are many places where you need to spread your work. 

This interview will be published in Spanish, with the intention of reaching a multitude of people who do not speak the English language.

10ch10- tell us what materials you use when you draw and why you adopt black and white in your illustrations. 

and what intention do you pose in them?

(10ch10- Decime qué materiales usas cuando dibujas y por qué adoptaste el blanco y negro en tus ilustraciones.

¿Y qué intención pretendes con ellos?

CH- I work on Illustration Board. The drawing, or line work, is done with a Rapidograph Pen, using 01, 03 and 07 nibs. The colour work is done with Watercolours and brushes. I began illustrating in black and white (b/w) because that was all I knew, and for some time I did not have the confidence to use colour. It is very easy to make a mistake with colour, and difficult to correct the mistake, and I really do not like starting a drawing a second time. With b/w it is usually easy to correct a mistake. Also, it is more difficult to achieve complex visual ideas with only b/w, it's more challenging, and I like challenge very much. It's limitations help me to improve my skills so that I can keep moving forward. And finally I think that b/w fits well with radicalism, it's poor. Colour is wealth.

(Yo trabajo en Illustration Board. 

El dibujo, o trabajo de línea, se realiza con un lápiz Rapidograph, utilizando puntas 01, 03 y 07. 

El trabajo de color se realiza con acuarelas y pinceles. 

Comencé a ilustrar en blanco y negro (b / w) porque eso era todo lo que sabía, y durante un tiempo no tuve la confianza de usar el color. 

Es muy fácil cometer un error con el color, y es difícil corregirlo, y realmente no me gusta comenzar un dibujo por segunda vez. 

En blanco y negro suele ser fácil corregir un error. 

Además, es más difícil lograr ideas visuales complejas con solo blanco y negro, es más desafiante y me gusta mucho desafiar. 

Sus limitaciones me ayudan a mejorar mis habilidades para que pueda seguir avanzando. 

Y finalmente creo que el blanco y negro encaja bien con el radicalismo, es pobre. 

El color es riqueza.)

10ch10- What does Clifford Harper mean by poverty and wealth?

(que entiende Clifford Harper por pobreza y riqueza?)

 CH- When I began working in the late '60's and early '70's, radical and anarchist publications could only print in b/w, nobody could afford colour printing. So, for me, b/w became the only way to work. Later, when there was more demand for my work and I began working for the national press, I was asked to produce colour work. 

What is my intention with my work ? This is a complicated question. The most important thing for me is to give pleasure, to present images that people enjoy looking at and feel pleasure when they study the image. As a radical and anarchist I read a lot of theory and ideas. I usually felt this stuff was hard to understand, lots of long words and complicated ideas. For me this was like hard work, and I had rebelled against work, but here it was again. I am not alone, like most working class people I find all this radical theory incomprehensible. Most of it comes from the middle class.  

With Pleasure from the image I also want to show to people the skill and craft and the care and time involved in making the image. So that people will see that the idea that is expressed is worth the effort of making it. So that the idea is validated, is given support by the image. Also I want to show people the image of Anarchism and Revolution, via an image made by a worker -me.  

(Cuando comencé a trabajar a finales de los años 60 y principios de los 70, las publicaciones radicales y anarquistas solo podían imprimirse en blanco y negro, nadie podía permitirse la impresión en color. 

Entonces, para mí, el Blanco y negro se convirtió en la única forma de trabajar. 

Más tarde, cuando hubo más demanda de mi trabajo y comencé a trabajar para la prensa nacional, me pidieron que hiciera trabajos de color. 

¿Cuál es mi intención con mi trabajo? 

Esta es una pregunta complicada. 

Lo más importante para mí es dar placer, presentar imágenes que las personas disfrutan mirando y sentir placer cuando estudian la imagen. 

Como radical y anarquista leo mucha teoría e ideas. 

Por lo general, sentía que esto era difícil de entender, muchas palabras largas e ideas complicadas. 

Para mí esto fue como un trabajo duro, y me había rebelado contra el trabajo, pero aquí estaba otra vez. 

No estoy solo, como la mayoría de la gente de clase trabajadora, encuentro incomprensible toda esta teoría radical. 

La mayor parte proviene de la clase media. 

Con Placer de la imagen también quiero mostrarle a las personas la habilidad, la habilidad y el cuidado y el tiempo necesario para crear la imagen. 

Para que la gente vea que la idea que se expresa vale el esfuerzo de hacerlo. 

Para que la idea sea validada, se le da soporte por la imagen. 

También quiero mostrarle a la gente la imagen del anarquismo y la revolución, a través de una imagen hecha por un trabajador -yo. 

10ch10- Remember what was your first published illustration?

CH- My earliest published work was in 1968, protesting the arrest of an American deserter here in London.

(Mi primer trabajo publicado fue en 1968, en protesta por el arresto de un desertor estadounidense aquí en Londres.)

10ch10- If you have to choose the 10 illustrations that most represent you, which ones would you choose?
