Cartoonist: Nik Gernert.

1- What is your name, where are you from, since when do you dedicate yourself to drawing and from when to professional illustration?

- My name is Nik Gernert from Stamford in the UK. I have Been working as an illustrator for about 8 years on and off after being made redundant when the company I work for went bust.

2- What comes first to your life, art or music?

- I guess art comes first but often music will be the inspiration behind the art that I make.

3- what are the bands you drew?

- I have mostly created work for bands that have a psychedelic or stoner side. The bands I have created work for most recently are Howlin rain, High Orbit, Lords of Dust, Tripped Up and The Wizard.

4- what are your favourite albums or bands?

- I am a Huge fan of Hawkwind and they are one of my got to bands when working. I have also been listening to a lot of grunge and 90S alt music recently, bands such as TAD, Veruca Salt, and the Butthole Surfers ect.

5- how do your illustrations develop, from the original idea to the last detail on the computer?

- The initial idea is often inspired by music or by something that randomly comes in my head. I start out with an initial pencil sketch and then work over that with a brush and ink, adding detail as I go. I then tend to add colour using the computer

6- What would be the drawings that generated the most success?

- The pieces I have had the most success with so far have been the ones based around psychedelia and motorcycle culture

7- For whom have you worked as a cartoonist?

- I produce a regular comic strip for Raydar Magazine along with some strips for my own Wrestling themed magazine called Die Hards and Unitards.

8- where have you exhibited your drawings?

- I have exhibited at varaious Hot Rod and Kustom kulture shows across Europe, including The Hotrod Hayride and The Trip Out in the Uk, The Kustom Kulture Show and the World of Kustom Kulture exhibition in Finland and the D.O.G.T art show at Kustom Kulture Forever in Germany. I have also exhibited at a few art spots in the UK and will be showing some work in my home town later in the year.

9- you follow the drawings of other illustrators, who are they?

- Some of my current favourite artists and illustrators include Alan Forbes, Kostuick Williams, Krk Ryden, Kim_a_tron, Maarten Donders, Elrod, Thomas Fernandez (liverad studios).

10- do you remember which was the best concert you saw, and why?

- There are a lot to choose from but if I had to pick one I would choose Comets on Fire at Nottingham Boat club in 2006. Its was wild, It was a small venue and just a brilliant, psychedelic sonic assault.

11- What would you need to draw?

- I start with a pencil and I mostly use a brush and ink for the main drawing . I then either colour with ink or digitally on the computer.

12- what would your life be like without art and music?

- Incredible boring.. Im not sure how I would spend my days.
