Cartoonist: Joe Robinson (interview/entrevista #76)

1- what is your name, where are you from and what is a normal day of your life like?


My name is Joe, a British guy living in Belgium, father of three and married to Sarah my illustrator wife. For the last twenty years I've been working as a branding & packaging designer after struggling to find illustration work after I left university. So even though I've made a successful career in design and am now currently the Creative Director at an agency here in Belgium, my first love is and will always be illustration.


1- ¿cómo te llamas, de dónde eres y cómo es un día normal de tu vida?


Mi nombre es Joe, un chico británico que vive en Bélgica, padre de tres hijos y casado con Sarah, mi esposa ilustradora. Durante los últimos veinte años he estado trabajando como diseñador de marca y empaque después de luchar para encontrar un trabajo de ilustración después de dejar la universidad. Entonces, aunque hice una carrera exitosa en diseño y ahora soy el Director Creativo en una agencia aquí en Bélgica, mi primer amor es y siempre será la ilustración.

2- what do you discover first? art or music?


Art I guess, but it's difficult to be sure, music was always there. I grew up obsessed with comics such as Asterix and Tintin and then moved swiftly to the Marvel and DC universe and finished with the graphic novel scene with Frank Millers 'Dark Knight Returns', Allan Moore's 'Watchmen' and 'Akira' from Katsuhiro Otomo. However, music was always in the background, creeping up on me, providing a soundtrack to what I was reading and drawing. It was just moving a bit slower I guess.


2- ¿que descubres primero? arte o musica?


Arte, supongo, pero es difícil estar seguro, la música siempre estuvo ahí. Crecí obsesionado con cómics como Asterix y Tintin y luego me mudé rápidamente al universo de Marvel y DC y terminé con la escena de la novela gráfica con Frank Millers 'Dark Knight Returns', 'Watchmen' de Allan Moore y 'Akira' de Katsuhiro Otomo. Sin embargo, la música siempre estaba de fondo, arrastrándose sobre mí, proporcionando una banda sonora a lo que estaba leyendo y dibujando. Supongo que se estaba moviendo un poco más lento.

3- since when do you link art to music?


As a kid I used to stare endlessly at album artwork, especially the illustrated ones and try to imagine the music through the design. My first favourite album cover was Guns 'n' Roses 'Appetite for Destruction', the banned version with the illustration of the demon robot and what looked like a ravaged woman. Naively I loved that album cover until I learnt why it had been banned. I remember also the Beastie Boys 'License to Ill' album cover and the jet aircraft that became a cigarette crashing into a wall and of course 'Goo' from Sonic Youth and the black & white comic inspired by Warhol and the Velvet Underground.


3- ¿desde cuando vinculas el arte con la música?


Cuando era niño, solía mirar sin cesar las ilustraciones de los álbumes, especialmente las ilustradas, e intentaba imaginar la música a través del diseño. Mi primera portada favorita fue Guns 'n' Roses 'Appetite for Destruction', la versión prohibida con la ilustración del robot demonio y lo que parecía una mujer devastada. Ingenuamente amé la portada de ese álbum hasta que supe por qué había sido prohibido. También recuerdo la portada del álbum Beastie Boys 'License to Ill' y el avión a reacción que se convirtió en un cigarrillo estrellándose contra una pared y, por supuesto, 'Goo' de Sonic Youth y el cómic en blanco y negro inspirado en Warhol y Velvet Underground.

4- how is the Underground scene in your city?


Because Belgium is kind of small, I don't have to rely on one single city for music as every town is easily accessible and just a short car ride away. Belgium is and has always been a crossroad for touring bands making their way across Europe. Absolutely everyone passes buy and sometimes more than once. Venues such as the AB and the Botanique, Magazin 4, the VK and Cirque Royale for Brussels. The Vooruit and the Charlatan / Kinky Star in Ghent. The Wilde Western in Kortrijk and Trix in Antwerp, plus countless others, the choice is endless. Plus the festivals in Belgium are the best there are for alternative music. It's a paradise and everything is so accessible and finding tickets isn't that hard.


4- ¿como es la escena underground en tu ciudad?


Debido a que Bélgica es un poco pequeña, no tengo que depender de una sola ciudad para la música, ya que todas las ciudades son fácilmente accesibles y están a un corto trayecto en coche. Bélgica es y siempre ha sido una encrucijada para las bandas de gira que se abren camino por Europa. Absolutamente todo el mundo pasa de comprar y, a veces, más de una vez. Lugares como el AB y el Botanique, Magazin 4, el VK y el Cirque Royale de Bruselas. El Vooruit y el Charlatán / Kinky Star en Gante. El Wilde Western en Kortrijk y Trix en Amberes, además de muchos otros, la elección es infinita. Además, los festivales de Bélgica son los mejores que existen para la música alternativa. Es un paraíso y todo es muy accesible y encontrar entradas no es tan difícil.

5- which bands in your environment would you recommend?


I must admit that I kind of prefer UK or American bands and struggle to really find something great in the punk or any other underground guitar based scene in Belgium. However I would check out bands such as 'Raketkanon' and 'Amenra' and from the old days Millionaire or 'Evil Superstars' who are legendary in this country and have a very large and loyal followings.


5- ¿que bandas de tu entorno recomendarías?


Debo admitir que prefiero las bandas británicas o estadounidenses y lucho por encontrar algo realmente genial en el punk o en cualquier otra escena de guitarras underground en Bélgica. Sin embargo, vería bandas como 'Raketkanon' y 'Amenra' y de los viejos tiempos Millionaire o 'Evil Superstars' que son legendarias en este país y tienen una gran cantidad de seguidores leales.

6- what are your favorite bands?


I have absolutely too many favourite bands to mention but if I was just to focus on the punk related scene that I would have to put 'Slaves' at the top of my list. Stripped down, two piece UK punk in a style that rattles my bones and makes me think of my youth growing up in the suburbs not far from London. Then you have to check out 'Idles', another big name in the new wave of British punk who's lyrics really speak to me and make the kind of open hearted and open minded political and emotional statements we all need to hear right now. Don't forget then the young lads from 'Shame' and finally 'Fontaines DC', the new kings of punk, fresh over from Dublin Ireland. All of these bands have one thing in common and that's amazing live performances, brutally raw and totally honest. The mosh pits at those gigs are not to be missed.


6- ¿cuáles son tus bandas favoritas?


Tengo demasiadas bandas favoritas para mencionar, pero si solo me enfocara en la escena relacionada con el punk, tendría que poner 'Slaves' en la parte superior de mi lista. Stripped Down, punk británico de dos piezas en un estilo que me hace sonar los huesos y me hace pensar en mi juventud creciendo en los suburbios no lejos de Londres. Luego tienes que ver 'Idles', otro gran nombre en la nueva ola de punk británico cuyas letras realmente me hablan y hacen el tipo de declaraciones políticas y emocionales abiertas de corazón y mente abierta que todos necesitamos escuchar en este momento. No olvidemos entonces a los jóvenes de 'Shame' y finalmente a 'Fontaines DC', los nuevos reyes del punk, recién llegados de Dublín Irlanda. Todas estas bandas tienen una cosa en común y son actuaciones en directo increíbles, brutalmente crudas y totalmente honestas. No se pueden perder los mosh pits en esos conciertos.

7- how do your illustrations develop? What techniques do you use?


I'm kind of old fashioned in the way I draw. I use pretty shitty layout marker paper and an ordinary clutch pencil with leads in. I sketch on the dining room table or anywhere I can and then use my light box to trace over the first drawing with black pen where I really get to work with all the detail that goes on forever. For years I would just draw things from out of my head but these days I'm using the computer a lot more for visual references so as to improve realism and gain inspiration. Finally after the ink drawing is made I scan it into my computer and then start colouring the illustration up in Adobe Photoshop until I get to the end result. There's nothing sophisticated or even artistic about my style or methods, I just draw and that's the way I like it.


7- ¿cómo se desarrollan tus ilustraciones? ¿Qué técnicas usas?


Soy un poco anticuado en la forma en que dibujo. Utilizo un papel de marcador de diseño bastante de mierda y un lápiz de mano ordinario con minas. Esbozo en la mesa del comedor o en cualquier lugar que pueda y luego uso mi caja de luz para trazar el primer dibujo con bolígrafo negro donde realmente me pongo a trabajar con todos el detalle que dura para siempre. Durante años, simplemente sacaba cosas de mi cabeza, pero en estos días uso mucho más la computadora para obtener referencias visuales para mejorar el realismo y obtener inspiración. Finalmente, después de hacer el dibujo a tinta, lo escaneo en mi computadora y luego comienzo a colorear la ilustración en Adobe Photoshop hasta llegar al resultado final. No hay nada sofisticado ni artístico en mi estilo o métodos, solo dibujo y así es como me gusta.

8- do you follow the illustrations of other cartoonists? who are they?


Again, I follow so many artists and illustrators, I don't know where to begin. Here's a couple though you've got to check out. From the old school comic world you need to know Jack Kirby, Mobeius ( Jean Giraud ), Mike Mignola, Geoff Darrow, Dave Gibbons and even Frank Miller who's work on Sin City is to die for. For more recent stuff, I'm a huge 'James Jean' fan, possibly the finest illustrator alive and don't forget Terada Katsuya, Gian Galang and Cleon Peterson. All well worth following on Instagram, those guy's are geniuses.


8- ¿sigues las ilustraciones de otros dibujantes? ¿Quienes son?


De nuevo, sigo a tantos artistas e ilustradores que no sé por dónde empezar. Aquí hay un par, aunque tienes que echarle un vistazo. Del mundo del cómic de la vieja escuela necesitas conocer a Jack Kirby, Mobeius (Jean Giraud), Mike Mignola, Geoff Darrow, Dave Gibbons e incluso Frank Miller, cuyo trabajo en Sin City es para morirse. Para cosas más recientes, soy un gran fan de 'James Jean', posiblemente el mejor ilustrador vivo y no olviden a Terada Katsuya, Gian Galang y Cleon Peterson. 9- what do you expect as a cartoonist for this year 2020?


I don't know what to expect. The world has gone a little crazy at the moment and it's hard to focus on the future when you don't really know when we'll finally get things back to normal. However, one day hopefully soon this will all become a memory and I'll be happy focusing on my love for skateboard design and illustration where I feel my kind of work really has it's home and is most appreciated. The new work I'm doing in collaboration with my local skate store is some of the best I've ever done and where I have the most creative freedom. The next dream is to be able to do a really huge piece of mural art somewhere in an urban area. I'm not sure how it's going to happen but we'll see.


9- ¿que esperas como dibujante para este año 2020?


No se que esperar. El mundo se ha vuelto un poco loco en este momento y es difícil concentrarse en el futuro cuando realmente no sabes cuándo finalmente volveremos a la normalidad. Sin embargo, espero que un día pronto todo esto se convierta en un recuerdo y seré feliz de concentrarme en mi amor por el diseño y la ilustración de patinetas, donde siento que mi tipo de trabajo realmente tiene su hogar y es más apreciado. El nuevo trabajo que estoy haciendo en colaboración con mi tienda de patinaje local es uno de los mejores que he hecho y donde tengo la mayor libertad creativa. El próximo sueño es poder hacer una obra de arte mural realmente enorme en algún lugar de una zona urbana. No estoy seguro de cómo va a suceder, pero ya veremos.

10- have you drawn for any band? albums, postergigs, portaits ...?


A good friend of mine Bart Desmedt is a recording artist under the name of BARST. His music soundscapes sit deep in the world of darkly experimental and often largely instrumental metal and electronica that is deeply atmospheric and mind-expanding. I've been working with Bart for roughly 2 years now where we've collaborated on gig posters and his most recent release 'RE: Cycles' on Consouling Sounds, who's album cover I illustrated and designed. 10- ¿has dibujado para alguna banda? álbumes, carteles, retratos ...?


Un buen amigo mío Bart Desmedt es un artista de grabación con el nombre de BARST. Sus paisajes sonoros musicales se encuentran profundamente en el mundo del metal y la electrónica oscuramente experimental y, a menudo, en gran medida instrumental, que es profundamente atmosférico y que expande la mente. 11- how would your life be without art and music?


Difficult to answer. Non-existent I guess. My obsession and love for both is just getting worse and nothing makes me happier. Luckily this is a nightmare I'll probably never have to experience. I listen to music every day and all day long and I'm always drawing something, so no worries there :)

11- ¿cómo sería tu vida sin arte y música?


Difícil de contestar. Inexistente, supongo. Mi obsesión y amor por ambos está empeorando y nada me hace más feliz. Afortunadamente, esta es una pesadilla que probablemente nunca tendré que experimentar. Escucho música todos los días y todo el día y siempre dibujo algo, así que no te preocupes :)
