Cartoonist: Sebastian Cuellar (Humo).

1- como te llamas, de donde eres, hacia dónde vas?
1 – What it’s your name? Where are you from? And where are you going?

Mi nombre es Sebastian Cuellar, soy físicamente de la ciudad de Bogotá, Colombia, aunque considero que no soy realmente de ningún lado, porque nada me pertenece realmente y eso a su vez me dice que no tengo un rumbo fijo y no sé a dónde voy a ir, lo único que tengo certeza es que eventualmente he de morir, más allá de eso no puedo decir nada más hacia dónde voy a ir.

My name it’s Sebastian Cuellar, I’m a physicall form I’m from Bogotá Colombia, But I think I’m from nowhere and I think that I’m going to nowhere to, the only thing that I’ve a really concience in my life it’s about I’m going to die eventualy

2- que llega primero a tu vida, el dibujo o la música?
2 – What came first to your life? The draw or the music?

Creo que ambos llegaron a mi vida desde joven, tengo un tío, hermano menor de mi madre, que le gustaba la música underground, en los 90’s el cual fue una fuerte inspiración para mí, lo cual me acerco a escuchar primero algo de metal y con el tiempo me fui acercando más al hardcore, al punk y posteriormente al grind y al crust punk, lo mismo el dibujo, creo que dibujo casi desde que tengo memoria, pero como mi trabajo y como algo que considero serio, desde hace casi ya 4 años.

 I think that both came to my life at the same time, because I had an Uncle in the 90’s how listen underground and rude musica, and I like it a lot, so I grew up so influenced by his music taste, and the beiginning I’m start listened metal music and before I start to listen, hardcore, punk and trougth the years, I start to listen grindcore and crust punk

3- cuál es tu rol en la escena underground?
3- what it’s your in the scene?

No sé si tenga un rol definido la verdad, eventualmente participo en ferias de arte gráfico, aunque en ciertas ocasiones he hecho arte para alguno que otro evento, para algún evento con fines caritativos como los de las pasadas manifestaciones del mes de noviembre y diciembre en Colombia, en donde en conjunto con unos amigxs, de la ciudad de Medellín, se organizó un evento para recolectar enceres y demás para ayudar al movimiento indígena, más allá de eso, algunos trabajos para bandas, así que no tengo muy claro cuál es realmente mi rol en la escena local jaja.

I’m not really sure if I have an specific role, Sometime I would participate in some local graphic art fairs, small punk concerts and another stuff’s, but at the same time I could participate in a charity event’s, like in the past mont’s of november and dicember here in Colombia, about the nacional strike for the social and economic unfair politics, so I deicided to colaborate with people from Medellin, how organice an event to recollect some basic usefull stuff, to help the indigena guard, in these city, and we can recollect near to 2 room’s of different things, like food, soap, blanket’s and another stuff’s, and sometimes, I’ve illustrated for a local bands and concerts, so for all those things I don’t have a really clarity if I could have a rol in this punk scene.

4- como se define tu estilo artístico?
4- How would you define your style?

Realmente lo defino como una mezcla de muchas cosas, constantemente intento mejorarlo y pulirme a mí mismo como artista e ilustrador, creo yo que es una mezcla de muchas cosas y estilos que me han gustado a lo largo de la vida e incluso influencia de otros ilustradores locales e internacionales, que creo que me han llevado a construir o intentar construir, para ir puliendo con el tiempo un estilo propio, al que pueda sentir mío.

I define my style like a mix from a different stuff’s, for example I took references from a diferent’s illustrators, local illustrators, from another countries too, from books, movies, and I like the idea, that my illustration would be melancholic, so I tried to express those part of my personality in my work, to create something that I could call mine.

5- que artes controlas?
5 – What art’s do you practice?

Normalmente ilustro en dos formatos, ilustración análoga, constándome de plumillas, estilógrafos, tinta china, pinceles, pero también ilustro en una gran medida en formato digital, pero añadido a eso se hacer algo de serigrafia, de risografia, de xilografia, algo de pintura con pigmentos acrílicos, trato de siempre intentar cosas nuevas y aun quiero aprender muchas más.

My strongest art I think it’s drawing with some basic things, like pencils. Stylograph, brushes, chinese ink, but at the same time I know how to draw with an digital tablet, and I made a lot of different digital illustration’s. Beyond my two big techniques, I know something about serigraphy, risography, xilography and I always tried to do my own stuff’s, and try to learn some new techniques.

6- cuáles son tus álbumes o bandas favoritas?
6 – What are your favorite bands or your favorite albums?

Uff tengo demasiados gustos, incluso algunos salen a veces un poco del punk, pero hablando de este creo que me inclino mucho por bandas como Fall of Efrafa, la cual es un gran factor influyente en la temática de mi trabajo, tal vez bandas como Nails, Full of Hell, Crass, Discharge, Dawnfall of gaia, doom, entre muchas otras, realmente nunca me pongo a clasificar mis bandas favoritas, porque siempre escucho demasiadas, incluso trato de estar escuchando cosas nuevas o buscar música nueva, para no quemar mi música vieja y poder disfrutarla mucho tiempo.

I don’t really have an unique group of favorite bands, but if I need to name someone, I say Fall of efrafa, It’s an a big influence to my work at illustrator by the topic’s in his music, bur I liked too bands like, Crass, Discharge, Disclose, Doom, Nails, Downfall of gaia, among other.

7- en que crees? ¿Cuál es tu lucha?
7– What you belive? What it’s your figth?

Mi lucha creo que es contra el mundo, pero en términos de intentar hacer las cosas de una manera en que aunque la razón diga que es lo correcto, al mundo le parece que es lo peor, apoyo muchas causas, entre eso la libertad del ser humano, la lucha de las chicas por su reivindicación como seres humanos, apoyo la lucha justa en contra de gobiernos corruptos como en el que actualmente debo vivir, como lo es Colombia, realmente trato de apoyar, así sea en términos ideológicos, cualquier posición que construya al ser humano y animales en dignidad, actualmente tengo la esperanza de terminar en algún momento mi consumo de carne, para finalmente dejar de consumir seres vivos, pero como todo es un proceso. Sin embargo, trato de apoyar lo que considero correcto desde mi punto de vista objetivo y no dejándome llevar por dogmas o fanatismos, que realmente no ayudan mucho.

My figth, I think it’s against all the things that are bad, I mean, where I am from, the people just normalize bad things, like be a liar, like don’t be honest, be cruel, just being a bad persons, so the correct way that I’ve to be, are beeing a good person, but I defend and respect a lot of different figth’s, like a girls how claim about thing’s that they should had time ago, about cruelty, about the world in chaos by the interest of interests destructive from some conuntries and companys, about the animal lifes and another stuff’s, in the human being freedom, but always trying to be objetive with all the topic’s and try to don’t follow and a sectarian way to think, and think by myself.

8- haces un Fanzine Digital o algo así?
8– You made an a Digital fanzine or something?

Fanzine si, si hago, pero digital en este momento no, tengo planeado subir algunos que tengo en formato físico a formato digital para compartirlos, me gusta la idea de poder compartir, y aunque mucho de mi trabajo en físico debo venderlo para conseguir el dinero para una reimpresión y seguir reproduciendo mi trabajo, me gusta la ventaja que podría llegar a tener un formato digital para la difusión de mi trabajo e ideas y quiero poder aplicarlo pronto.

Actually, no, I want to start publish some of my fanzine’s in digital format, to share with the people, because in a printed version, I need to sell my work to get money for an a reprint of my job, but I belive that the digital media can be a good way to share my work and the way that I see the life.

9- como es la escena de tu ciudad y que bandas recomendarías de tu entorno?
9 – How is it, the local punk scene in your city? What band’s do you recommend?

Bueno la escena de mi ciudad es algo extraña, se puede decir que esta la parte punk que es más influenciada por bandas creo yo, como eskorbuto y está la otra parte un poco más influenciada por bandas como Discharge, Disclose y demás, no estoy muy seguro, la verdad soy algo desapegado a veces, pero creo que hay demasiada rivalidad por cosas demasiado simples y que aunque, el concepto de punk está en la unidad, ayudar y demás, mucha gente como no solo en este ambiente Bogotano, si no en muchos otros, simplemente convierten muchas de las cosas  en clubs de popularidad, lo cual es algo triste, porque en esencia el punk no debería regirse por sistemas que dice criticar, a pesar de eso, hay mucha gente genial, le tengo afecto a varios de ellos y no puedo decir que totalmente todo sea de esa manera, así que ya dicho eso creo que recomendaría de mi gusto personal bandas como, Muro, Mongolico, Perro con Kancha, Empatía (no es netamente punk, pero les aprecio), Nastiness, Terco, Chulo y bueno, en este momento no tengo más en mente, pero hay muchas buenas bandas locales.

Well the local scene in my city It’s a little weird, cause we have a too local ways, oh well I think, that it’s like that, to beigin we had an a local punk scene how has been influencied, by an Spain punk band named Eskorbuto, and by the other side from the gap, we had the discharge or d beat punk scene. But sometimes, the people just conver the local scene in to a popularity game, and I’m disagree with that, cause I belive in a support punk scene, but sometimes the people are just nasty and unpleasant, but not all the people think like that, I know a lot of person’s how think different and don’t try to be an a rock stars, so It’s a kinda great. And the local bands that I’ve to recommend, maybe Muro, Mongolico, Chuclo, Terco, Empatia (It’s not a punk band but, they are a great guys), Nasitness and perro con kancha.

10- normalmente tus ilustraciones terminadas son en blanco y negro. ¿Porque esta decisión y no el color?
10– Usually you end your illustrations in black and white, ¿Why this decision?¿Why not color?

Creo que mi ilustración es bastante melancólica, porque, aunque aborda temática punk y suelo ilustrar del tema, el uso del color negro refleja bastante pesadumbre, algo de tristeza, cosa que suelo intentar transmitir en mi trabajo, además de añadir que, aunque si he hecho trabajos en color, me siento más cómodo haciendo trabajos a blanco y negro a tramas, lo que creo que con el tiempo he mejorado bastante.

 Well I think my illustration want to trasmit some melancholy, so the black and white are a perffect chose to create my illustrations, this decision and the way that I draw, like an medieval carve sometimes  using an a some draw weft, give them some dark and obscure atmosphere, and I like it a lot, but somewhere I draw in a color’s too, but I always prefer the black and white.

 11- cual fue el mejor concierto que viste? ¿Te acuerdas por qué?
11 - which has been the best concert, you've seen?

En este momento no puedo decir uno en específico, porque he visto varios que me han gustado mucho, pero si puedo mencionar en especial el rock al parque en Bogotá del año 2016, con bandas como napalm death en vivo, fue uno de los conciertos a los que más aprecio le tengo en mis recuerdos, entre otros muchos pequeños conciertos locales que han estado bastante bien, sobre todo de bandas locales.

I remember the 2016 rock al parque here in Bogota, I saw a lot of great bands like Napalm death, so I really love that concert, cause, Napalm are one of the bands that I start to listen when I was a young boy, so, see them live are a very very precious memory to me, and usually I saw a lot of local bands in a local concert’s, and this are great too.

12- la gente donde ha podido ver exhibidas tus ilustraciones?
12 – Where the people could seen your work?

Yo normalmente no suelo estar en exhibiciones, porque no se me ha presentado esa oportunidad para mostrar en una exposición mi trabajo, cosa que algun día me encantaría, pero normalmente en pequeños conciertos, en ferias de arte gráfico la gente puede ver de cerca mi trabajo y sobre todo por redes sociales mucho, porque suelo subir trabajos con regularidad, porque me gusta estar haciendo cosas, así que eso me ha ayudado un poco a mover mi trabajo y a que la gente pueda conocer lo que hago.

In a lot of punk concert’s at the beiginning and graphic art fairs, but someday I want to have my own exposition about my work, I had hadn’t these yet, cause the oportunity has not been submitted, so I wait maeby in the future have that oportunity.

13- como dibujante que esperas para este 2020?
13 – Like an illustrator what do you waiting for 2020?

Realmente espero poder seguir dibujando, espero poder hacer algo muy interesante y tengo varios proyectos pensados para este año los cuales me encantaría tener claros y poder realizar, para seguir avanzando como ilustrador, también espero no morir en una tercera guerra mundial, pero eso es harina de otro costal.  

Maeby still draw, and I have the hope that I could make something very special and interesting, I have in mind some project’s and I hope to perfom that to keep moving foward, and became in a great illustrator with the pass of the time, and I hope don’t die in a world war 3, but this a another sack flour topic.

14- Has dibujado para otras bandas?
14- Are you drawn by another bands?

Actualmente sí, he dibujado para una banda de post punk local llamada Azar paralelo y hace poco estuve haciendo la caratula para una banda de Pereira llamada Agonía, banda de D – beat, la cual está empezando, pero ya suenan bastante bien, espero poder hacer más trabajos para más bandas, locales o internacionales si se presenta el caso. 

Ahh, yeah, actually I was drawn by an a Post punk band named Azar paralelo, and  a few day’s ago, I’m finish an a cover illustration to an a D beat band named Agonia, from Pereira (another Colombian city), but I want draw more for another bands, not just national band’s, not just national band’s, international bands too.

15- como seria tu vida sin arte y música?
15- How would be your life without music and art?

Seria extrañamente aburrida, porque tengo la idea de que ligo mucho mi concepto de música, mi concepción del arte y el gusto de estas con mi forma de ser, así que es muy probable que humo no existiera, es probable que yo no sería el ser humano que soy actualmente, probablemente estaría intentando encontrarme en pasatiempos vacíos y queriendo encajar en grupos de personas que se dejan guiar mucho por tendencias más que por un gusto real, o quien sabe yo tal vez también solo sigo tendencias, pero otras diferentes, pero en ese caso, creo que sería una persona con una concepción de la vida muy diferente a la que poseo actualmente.

Would proably be an a usual person with usual likes, Maeby I would feel some avoid sensation inside myself by tryig to get my place with another kind of people in another kind of place’s, and it will be weird and unconffortable to me, probably I would be like an a person how only follow trending topic’s, like super heroe movies, or just like footbal, or something like that, and I don’t think that these kind’s of taste arround that activitie’s are bad, but maybe I don’t feel confortable follo them, I don’t know, my life wold be boring I think.
