1- What is your name, where are you from, and how long have you been doing Punk drawing?
My name is PANOS MPAROUTIS, and I come from Naousa Imathias a small town near Thessaloniki, Greece. I’ve been sketching for about 5 years now since I’ve moved in Athens.
¿Cómo te llamas, de dónde eres y cuánto tiempo llevas haciendo dibujos relacionados al punk?
Me llamo PANOS MPAROUTIS y soy de Naousa Imathias, un pequeño pueblo cerca de Tesalónica, Grecia. Llevo dibujando unos 5 años desde que me mudé a Atenas.
2- What is the main reason why you draw and what is your intention when doing it?
Do you expect any reaction from people? Drawing is more like a hobby to me. It’s an opportunity to decompress myself from daily routine. At first, I didn’t expect any reactions from other people as my only audience was my family!!!!
2-¿Cuál es la razón principal por la que dibujas y cuál es tu intención al hacerlo? ¿Esperas alguna reacción de la gente?
Para mí dibujar es más bien un hobby. Es una oportunidad para descomprimirme de la rutina diaria. Al principio no esperaba ninguna reacción de otras personas ya que mi única audiencia era mi familia.
3- Tell us about the scene in your region and what projects are worth mentioning. (Zines, squatters, bands, podcasts, labels...)
Punk scene is amazing. In general, there are many remarkable bands. Bands who play more than 40 years, such as ANTI, STRESS, the LAST DRIVE but there are also a lot of newborn bands in local scene with a lot to give. Always “new blood” has a lot to say. Some are 90’s Fatkid, NECROPOLIS, ΟΤΟΜΠΡΙΤΣΙ ΜΟΤΟΡΙ.
3- Cuéntanos cómo es la escena en tu región y qué proyectos vale la pena mencionar. (Zines, okupaciones, bandas, podcasts, sellos...)
La escena punk es increíble. En general hay muchas bandas destacables. Bandas que llevan más de 40 años tocando, como ANTI, STRESS, THE LAST DRIVE, pero también hay un montón de bandas nuevas en la escena local con mucho que dar. La “sangre nueva” tiene mucho que decir. Algunos son Fatkid de los 90, NECROPOLIS, OTOMPITI OTOMPI.
4- Have you drawn for bands or other projects other than your fanzine? Please tell us a little bit more about Punk Against Capitalism.
Most of my drawings mention lyrics from my favorite songs. It’s my way of decoding them. In fact, that was the basic idea for my fanzine. For example, after the first PUNK AGAINST CAPITALISM(P.A.C.), in Agricultural University, I drew a poster for MOB 47. In fact, that was the last time that a live event took place in that area!!! P.A.C is a mutual community with different people with the same purpose: SOLIDARITY.
4-¿Has dibujado para bandas u otros proyectos aparte de tu fanzine? Cuéntanos un poco más sobre Punk Against Capitalism.
La mayoría de mis dibujos mencionan letras de mis canciones favoritas. Es mi manera de decodificarlos. De hecho, esa fue la idea básica de mi fanzine. Por ejemplo, después del primer PUNK CONTRA EL CAPITALISMO (P.A.C.), en la Universidad Agrícola, dibujé un cartel para MOB 47. ¡De hecho, esa fue la última vez que tuvo lugar un evento en vivo en esa zona! P.A.C es una comunidad mutua con diferentes personas con un mismo objetivo: LA SOLIDARIDAD.
5- Do you consider yourself an idealist? What is your struggle?
I don’t like putting labels on people. You could say that I consider myself an idealist because I wish that sometime people will know their strength and try to live peacefully all around the world, apart from wars and territorial claims, giving the proper importance to solidarity, love and care. Also, I could say that this is a utopia, so I also find myself as a nihilist.
5-¿Te consideras un idealista? ¿Cual es tu lucha?
No me gusta ponerle etiquetas a las personas. Se podría decir que me considero un idealista porque deseo que algún día la gente conozca su fuerza y trate de vivir en paz en todo el mundo, al margen de guerras y reivindicaciones territoriales, dando la debida importancia a la solidaridad, al amor y al cuidado. También podría decir que esto es una utopía, por lo que también me considero nihilista.
6- There are some images from your fanzine on display in some bookstores. Is it as easy as going, offering it and distributing it?
Of course not! I’ve started communicating my sketches through my social media for some time, before my friend Alexis from PROLETKULT RADIO, proposed to participate in UNDERGROUND UNION BAZZAR. All I had were my sketches. I had to find a way to make them digital, illustrate, print them and publish my fanzine. And of course there was no money for any of that!!! Finally, I managed to publish my first fanzine, ΠΑΝΚΟΔΡΟΜΙΟ which was released in UNDERGROUND UNION BAZZAR, in December 2021.
6-Hay algunas imágenes de tu fanzine expuestas en algunas librerías. ¿Es tan fácil como ir, ofrecerlo y distribuirlo?
¡Por supuesto que no! Comencé a comunicar mis sketches a través de mis redes sociales hace algún tiempo, antes de que mi amigo Alexis de PROLETKULT RADIO, me propusiera participar en UNDERGROUND UNION BAZZAR. Todo lo que tenía eran mis bocetos. Tenía que encontrar la manera de hacerlos digitales, ilustrarlos, imprimirlos y publicar mi fanzine. ¡¡¡Y por supuesto no había dinero para nada de eso!!! Finalmente, logré publicar mi primer fanzine, PANKODYPOMIYO que fue lanzado en UNDERGROUND UNION BAZZAR, en diciembre de 2021.
7- In your illustrations you write in Greek and English, is English a language you use to reach a different audience?
My illustrations are based in lyrics of Greek punk bands. I borrow lyrics from their songs that match my sketches. Some of them are in English, some in Greek. It’s not on purpose but it’s a good opportunity to reach a different audience from abroad. You see Greek language is a little bit difficult to understand!
7- En tus ilustraciones escribes en griego e inglés, ¿es el inglés un idioma que utilizas para llegar a un público diferente?
Mis ilustraciones están basadas en letras de bandas punk griegas. Tomo prestadas letras de sus canciones que coinciden con mis bocetos. Algunos de ellos están en inglés, otros en griego. No lo hago a propósito, pero es una buena oportunidad para llegar a un público diferente, del extranjero. ¡Verás que el idioma griego es un poco difícil de entender!
8- Apart from drawing, making fanzines, setting up your own distribution stand, do you also have other projects related to DIY Punk?
As a part of P.A.C. I’m trying to help and participate as much as I can. There are many ideas, but my free time is limited. I don’t do that for a living. In every chance I find though, I try to give my best.
8- Aparte de dibujar, hacer fanzines, montar tu propio stand de distribución, ¿tienes otros proyectos relacionados con el DIY Punk?
Como parte de P.A.C. Estoy intentando ayudar y participar lo máximo que pueda. Hay muchas ideas, pero mi tiempo libre es limitado. No hago eso para ganarme la vida. Sin embargo, en cada oportunidad que encuentro, trato de dar lo mejor de mí.
9- Personally I am not aware of the Squat movement in Athens, nor of an anarcho-punk or anti-speciesist movement. What could you tell us about it to give us a more realistic idea?
Personally, I’m not aware of other movements in Greece. Mostly I’m into punk music and solidarity, despite whether it comes from.
9- Personalmente no tengo conocimiento del movimiento Squat en Atenas, ni tampoco de un movimiento anarco-punk o antiespecista. ¿Qué podrías contarnos al respecto para darnos una idea más realista?
Personalmente, no conozco otros movimientos en Grecia. Principalmente me gusta la música punk y la solidaridad, independientemente de dónde venga.
10- Could you tell us which are the non-profit labels, or the most DIY labels in Greece to find material?
DIY movement in Greece in my opinion is still in its very beginning. There are a lot of remarkable artists, with very nice artwork and you can find them through social media and mostly in Athens, such as Proletkult Radio, P.A.C., Underground Union Athens, Creep records.
10- ¿Podrías decirnos cuáles son los Sellos sin ánimo de lucro, o las marcas más DIY en Grecia para encontrar material?
El movimiento DIY en Grecia, en mi opinión, todavía está en sus primeras etapas. Hay muchos artistas notables, con obras de arte muy bonitas, y puedes encontrarlos a través de las redes sociales y principalmente en Atenas, como Proletkult Radio, P.A.C., Underground Union Athens, Creep Records.
11- What do you think about underground bands that are published by labels that profit from double or triple what the edition really costs? Are the bands, the labels responsible, who pays for them?
It’s very helpful to have a label for your project which will take care of all the needed work, so you don’t have to worry about every little detail. But this leads to higher costs, which are passed on to byers. On the other hand, it is very common to see high prices nowadays in underground bands, which is opposite to punk spirit. That’s the main reason why I prefer DIY and free contribution.
11- ¿Qué opinas de las bandas underground que son editadas por sellos que se lucran con el doble o el triple de lo que realmente cuesta la edición? ¿Son las bandas y los sellos los responsables? ¿Quién paga por ellos?
Es muy útil tener un Sello para tu proyecto que se encargue de todo el trabajo necesario, para que no tengas que preocuparte por cada pequeño detalle. Pero esto implica unos costes más elevados, que se trasladan a los compradores. Por otro lado, es muy común ver hoy en día precios altos en bandas underground, lo cual es opuesto al espíritu punk. Ésta es la razón principal por la que prefiero el DIY y la contribución gratuita.
12- How did the so-called Corona Virus affect your scene? Is there talk among you about Cheamtrails or Geo-engineering? Is the anti-Zionist struggle an important political cause in Greek punk?
Unfortunately, I don’t know how the things before Corona was because I’ve moved in Athens at the begging of 2020 and I joined “the scene” 3 years ago.
12-¿Cómo afectó el llamado Coronavirus a vuestra escena? ¿Se habla entre vosotros de Cheamtrails o de geoingeniería? ¿Es la lucha antisionista una causa política importante en el punk griego?
Lamentablemente, no sé cómo eran las cosas antes del coronavirus, porque me mudé a Atenas a principios de 2020 y me uní a la escena hace tres años.
13- What would your life be like without art and music?
As far as I can remember myself and my childhood was full of music. In a small town in 90’s it was very difficult to find new releases of records and especially of underground bands. The only way to learn and find them was the radio. You should travel to the nearby town of Thessaloniki, where things were a little bit easier. Art and music make our lives prettier and full of colors, feelings and emotions. I couldn’t imagine a life without them.
13-¿Cómo sería tu vida sin el arte y la música?
Hasta donde recuerdo, mi infancia estuvo llena de música. En un pueblo pequeño en los años 90 era muy difícil encontrar nuevos lanzamientos de discos y especialmente de bandas underground. La única forma de aprenderlos y encontrarlos era la radio. Deberías viajar a la cercana ciudad de Tesalónica, donde las cosas eran un poco más fáciles. El arte y la música hacen nuestras vidas más bonitas y llenas de colores, sentimientos y emociones. No podría imaginar una vida sin ellos.
14- How would you use this space to send a message to those of us who read this article?
