Dibujantes/Cartoonist: Steven Friel #113 (Biografía y galería de imágenes incompleta / Biograpfy and incomplet image gallery).

Hoy toca turno de presentar a un dibujante que ha enamorado a muchos con sus diseños para las portadas de muchas bandas que en sus momento todos escuchamos, o almenos supimos de su existencia. Me refiero a Steven Friel, y con él abriré una seguidilla de dibujantes que alguna vez dejaron huella en la cultura Oi!

"Me gané mi costra diseñando camisetas y volantes en un par de tiendas en Carnaby Street . Luego vino la explosión del Ska en 1988 y estaba en el lugar correcto en el momento correcto. Varios ejecutivos de compañías discográficas me utilizaron para diseñar carátulas de discos y CD. Y a través de algunos amigos musicales me convertí en el artista oficial de Bad Manners . Durante tres años trabajé en el barco del canal de Doug (Buster) en medio de su jardín trasero. Ese fue solo un momento surrealista de mi vida. Casi  arrestan a Buster por anunciar su último álbum en el costado de un autobús de dos pisos mientras estábamos filmando un video en Oxford Street. ¡No sabíamos que era ilegal! También fui responsable de hacer la fascia de 'Fatty Towers Hotel' en Margate.

En este tiempo completé 70-80 portadas de discos (para Bad Manners , The Last Resort , Yellowman , Laurel Aitken, Ansell Collins , Augustus Pablo y The Steve Gibbons Band , entre unos pocos). 

Diseñé el frente de una tienda en Regent Street , dibujé tiras cómicas de dibujos animados para Zoot Magazine , Scootering y Smut . También rediseñé el logo de Mencap e hice las portadas de tres libros.

Diseñé el aspecto de una empresa de contratación laboral y me gané elogios por su lanzamiento en Wembley Conference Center y el frente de sus dos tiendas en Wembley y Walthamstow. Hice imprimir

una foto de Arnold Scharzennegger en el periódico The Sun y gané el primer premio. La imagen está ahora en exhibición en Planet Hollywood, Piccadilly .

Desde entonces me he concentrado en historietas y caricaturas. He escrito a ciertas revistas de televisión solo para que el editor rechace mis caricaturas por ser "demasiado salvajes". Un amigo mío dijo que un retrato suyo estaba "al borde de la ofensiva". ¡Alabado sea!

Actualmente estoy trabajando en una propuesta de guión cinematográfico en forma de tira cómica llamada 'Brainsick'. Además, he desarrollado los personajes para un musical animado llamado 'The Umbrella Story' . He recibido cartas complementarias y autógrafos de Oasis , Prodigy , Madness , Anna Friel , Joe Strummer , Reggie Kray , Charlotte y Lisa Coleman , el elenco de Eastenders , el elenco de Grange Hill , Tom Baker y, por supuesto,¡ Bad Manners!

Today is the turn to present a cartoonist who has fallen in love with many with his designs for the covers of many bands that at the time we all heard, or at least knew of their existence. I am referring to Steven Friel, and with him I will open a string of cartoonists who once left their mark on Oi! Culture.

 

"I earned my scab designing T-shirts and flyers in a couple of stores on Carnaby Street. Then came the Ska explosion in 1988 and I was in the right place at the right time. Several record company executives used me to design album covers and CD. And through some musical friends I became the official Bad Manners artist. For three years I worked on Doug's (Buster) canal boat in the middle of his back garden. That was just a surreal moment in my life. Buster was almost arrested for announcing his latest album on the side of a double-decker bus while we were shooting a video on Oxford Street. We didn't know it was illegal! I was also responsible for doing the fascia for 'Fatty Towers Hotel' in Margate.

In this time I completed 70-80 album covers (for Bad Manners, The Last Resort, Yellowman, Laurel Aitken, Ansell Collins, Augustus Pablo and The Steve Gibbons Band, among a few).

I designed a store front on Regent Street, I drew cartoon comics for Zoot Magazine, Scootering, and Smut. I also redesigned the Mencap logo and made the covers of three books.

I designed the look of a job recruitment company and earned accolades for its launch at Wembley Conference Center and the front of its two stores in Wembley and Walthamstow. I did print

A photo of Arnold Scharzennegger in The Sun newspaper and I won first prize. The image is now on display at Planet Hollywood, Piccadilly.

Since then I have concentrated on comics and cartoons. I have written to certain television magazines only to have the editor reject my cartoons as "too wild." A friend of mine said that a portrait of him was "on the brink of the offensive." Praise him!

I am currently working on a film script proposal in the form of a comic strip called 'Brainsick'. Also, I have developed the characters for an animated musical called 'The Umbrella Story'. I've received supplemental letters and autographs from Oasis, Prodigy, Madness, Anna Friel, Joe Strummer, Reggie Kray, Charlotte, and Lisa Coleman, the cast of Eastenders, the cast of Grange Hill, Tom Baker, and of course, Bad Manners!
